Know Who you are not what you are

 File under a little knowledge is a dangerous thing:

So many folks think all it takes to be black is to put on some African inspired garb, made in china, spout some notions of Afro-centricity, from folks that have never been to Africa or apparently the hood, and change their name to Kunta Kente. Black is not about form but substance, it is not about externalization but internalization, it is not about perpetrating but representing. Strange our grandparents and their parents knew this, lived this, and essentialized this. Perhaps we need to study them a bit more, and ignore the "black" fad- or is it flavor of the week..

Friends are those that celebrate your victories, enemies ignore them. Friends hold you accountable, enemies encourage you to screw up. Friends are there when things go wrong, enemies plan parties to celebrate. Friends welcome you, enemies forsake you. Friends cry when you mourn, enemies could care less......Friends know ...Every Praise.....belongs to God..

Dreams not fears should guide you 





Dreams Return

What happens when dreams return?

Do they sparkle with hope and glisten with song

Do they prance along voyeuristic roads?

Where wonder and surprise forever unfold.


What happens when dreams return?

Do they fill cups with promise and souls with laughter?

Do they shatter despair and vanquish frustration

Where each day overflows with possibilities.

Or do they point the way to unbridled futures?


Don't give up or in ... hold on to your dreams....

Pursue them with passionate determination

Nurture them diligently with excellence and resolve

Keep getting up till your dreams become reality.


Then, dream a new dream as dreams return.

  When God created woman, he was working late on the 6th day. An angel came by and asked, “Why spend so much time on her?" The Lord answered, “Have you seen all the specifications I have to meet to shape her? She must function in all kinds of situations. She must be able to embrace several kids at the same time. A Vietnam veteran comes home

I grew up listening to the blues of Bessie Smith, Billie Holliday, BBKing, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Ma Rainey. Some unfamiliar with the black experience and blues might look and listen to these songs and see pain and suffering, or a constant complaint. BUt those from within the black experience see -not a complaint but a critique, not pain but endurance, and not suffering but deliverance. As BBKing once remarked -Blues is like a liniment, good for whatever ails you. So, in recognition of this deeper meaning of the blues, I offer this Veterans day some Blues for the Veteran, particularly those form Vietnam. As a black Vietnam Veteran, entering the military in 1968 in the midst of the student protests, the overwhelming death toll of the black veteran, and the continual frustration with a war that was never declared, and one that we should never have entered.
