Yes, I have come a long way

 


I have walked in the valley of shadow of death
I have wondered in the wilderness
I have drifted along the path of forgetfullness
I have landed in the pit of despair
I have been accorded the status of fools
] have experienced the scorn of my friends
I have been dismissed and abandoned by family
I have come a long way.

When I was lost and full of disdain
disappointment and frustration filled my days
Alone, as I was cut adrift
drowning in sadness, confusion and fear.

Down, at the point of giving up
barely enough to eat, holes in my shoes
filled with cardboard, dodging bill collectors
stealing from Paul to pay Peter
stranded on the corner of pain and hopelessness
walking in the path of destruction
waking in the sea of wasted moments.
I have come a long way.


But then -then the sky opened
blessings upon blessings poured out
it was not by my will, but His
I don't look like what I have been through
I never would have made it on my own
God helped me so I would not let go
His mercy kept me so I could see this new day
Yes, I have come a long way.

A Vietnam veteran comes home

I grew up listening to the blues of Bessie Smith, Billie Holliday, BBKing, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Ma Rainey. Some unfamiliar with the black experience and blues might look and listen to these songs and see pain and suffering, or a constant complaint. BUt those from within the black experience see -not a complaint but a critique, not pain but endurance, and not suffering but deliverance. As BBKing once remarked -Blues is like a liniment, good for whatever ails you. So, in recognition of this deeper meaning of the blues, I offer this Veterans day some Blues for the Veteran, particularly those form Vietnam. As a black Vietnam Veteran, entering the military in 1968 in the midst of the student protests, the overwhelming death toll of the black veteran, and the continual frustration with a war that was never declared, and one that we should never have entered.
